Borjomi is mineral water of volcanic origin and by natural criteria counts more than 1500 years. Pushed out by the natural carbonic gas it comes on the earth’s surface from depth of 8-10 kilometers.
Unlikely to other sodium bicarbonate types of water Borjomi doesn’t get cool underground and comes out being warm (38-41 °С). On its way water is enriched with 60 different minerals, contained in The Caucasian mountains solids.
Results of Borjomi water researches show that in its forming participate deep salt-affected, present-day fresh and low salt-affected water. How does it arise from the entrails of the earth? To answer this question let us recall few theories of subsurface water origin.
One of the first theories – infiltration – was proposed by a Roman architect Marcus Vitruvius Pollio yet in ancient times. But modern scientists still base on it. According to this theory subsurface water originate from atmospheric precipitations diving in the ground through mountain solid channels.
At the end of 19th century the world admired the condensation theory of German engineer O. Volger, who supposed that subsurface water appear due to condensation of atmosphere water gas in the ground.
Finally, one of the last theories – juvenile – was proposed by Vienna geologist E. Suess. The scientist gave evidences regarding relation of some kinds of mineral water with Earth magma.
According to his theory, the products of liquefied magma get in the areas with lower temperature and condensate, forming juvenile (primeval) water, which comes out through surface with springs. But it appears not being pure, while coming up through mountain cavities juvenile water often dissolves the solids due to volcanic gases, fills up with minerals and mixes up with underground water, having other (often - infiltration) origin.
At the beginning of 1990’s, during one of the researches it was discovered that Borjomi cardinally differs from the other examined kinds of mineral water by the proportion of some hydrogen isotopes.
As like as not, these data approve that there is a considerable part of the Juvenile ‘primeval’ component in this mineral water.
Probably, uniqueness of Borjomy, its positive health influence and finally popularity can be referred to the secrets of its origin.
